Nov. 11th, 2009 @ 02:00 pm Network Maintenance: Saturday, November 14, 2009 at 04:00-06:00 UTC/GMT
On Saturday the 14th at 4AM UTC/GMT we will be upgrading the operating system of our network load balancers to a newer version, one that will allow us to use both CPUs! Nifty, because multiprocessing is nice.

Since we have 2 load balancers, the plan is to upgrade 1 at a time, and there really should be very little impact to our website. Hopefully you won't notice a thing and I'll get to go back to the hotel and watch some wonderful late night infomercials.

We've got a lot of exciting projects coming up for 2010 and we're hoping that we'll be able to deliver them all to you, that you will find it useful/cool/lovely and then you will use the site even more. Behind-the-scenes work like this will give us the capacity to handle the anticipated traffic, so expect a few more maintenance windows especially in the beginning of next year as we've got some neat ideas to improve performance around here! We had the recent 30-45 minute outage yesterday due to one of our logging databases filling up disk space -- not so great design coupled with my human error in handling the initial problem -- and it looks like we're going to finally have some resources to eliminate stuff like that. I can't wait!

As usual, I will be updating status.livejournal.org before and after, just in case you are not able to reach our main website during the work.

Once again I have started several things in this little box, but nothing's made the cut so far. I have it in my head that my NaBloPoMo posts should be public (which isn't actually a pre-requisite, if memory serves), and that's what's making me edit and delete myself. I actually like the last thing that fell out of my brain and onto the screen earlier today. Perhaps I need a different venue. Perhaps these things will remain saved as draft e-mails for a long time. Perhaps these things are better left in my head for now...unshared. Not that sharing is a bad thing, but sometimes it can take away a little.

I have had a ridiculous amount of coffee today, and now it seems I'm trying to match that with a similar volume of bucks fizz. I'm not entirely sure why, but it seemed like a good idea at the time.

The above isn't really a good place to stop, but I just opened Word to do a spell check and hit ctrl-c automatically...and wound up with the aforementioned brain-fall-out, instead of what's here.

I think it's time for the Princeton sweatshirt.

I think it was yesterday that Bon Jovi released their most recent album! I was so very excited!! It's the only band that still leaves me giggling and screaming away like a little teenage fanatic girl! And to all who think they are old or whatever, please keep that to yourselves! :P For whatever reasons, that's usually people's first reaction to when I mention the name Bon Jovi! I wish I could be rocking away like them at their age! And Jon Bonjovi's smile never ages! sigh *heart melts*

It's been a long time since I bought a music CD. I don't even remember what my last purchase was! So, when the thought of going out and buying the album came, I was stumped. I didn't know where the closest music store was! Do they even have those places anymore after the advent of iPods?!

I remember the days of yesteryears/decade when I would try and listen to whatever music I could to get a taste of variety of music! Since, I couldn't afford to buy CDs/cassettes of every artist I liked, I would actually record hours of radio music and "cut & paste" the songs that I liked and made my own cassettes!! Then slowly I "upgraded" to buying CD albums. And then entered the world of Napster.

And then the interest just died. The music I have now is stuck in 2002 (me thinks). Occasionally you will find me turning on the radio, at home or on the internet. Forget catching a music video on MTV, I think they have discarded "Music" from their station! And occasionally I get to "enjoy" the music of fellow DC drivers who blare their music with their windows open!

How interests change... But my project now is to find a music shop and sample the album! I really wish I made an attempt to go watch the free performance they gave last year in NYC Central Park! sigh.... A great band to see in concert I hear! I probably lose my voice screaming more than listening to their music! hahahah..... drools away...

She's known to us as ...simply...Dadda...which was my sister-in-law's childish way of saying "dAdi mA" (paternal grandmother).

She's approximately 90 years old; I'm not sure she knows when, exactly, her birthday is. She's as spry and perky as a sparrow. She still makes most of her meals herself; she was married to a freedom fighter, who won the tAmra patrA for his struggles, and still earns a freedom fighter's pension herself.

She's a repository of wisdom, tales of long ago, stories of her family, and is a superb cook.

She keeps up her pooja-pAth (rituals of worship) but accepts me as I am....and though she is rigid in her own discipline, she's incredibly modern in some of her views...when her grand-daughter wanted to marry a south Indian, and the relatives were against it, she said that her husband had fought for Indian independence, not north Indian independence!

She'll be travelling by train tonight, on her freedom fighter's pass... to Kanpur, Lucknow, and then to Haridwar, where she lives in an ashram, where, every day, she can see her beloved "gangA ji"...Mother Ganges.

Here she is, with our maid, Chitra, braiding her hair...which is snow-white, long, and curly as a baby's!

chitra doing dadda's hair 111109

She's so affectionate...she travelled all the way to attend my daughter's wedding, and took a star part in the festivities....

Dadda...a dearly beloved lady.

Nov. 11th, 2009 @ 09:54 am LJ novice looking for constructive advice and creative partnerships.
I have a alternative community network brand concept with assets I wish to share without my attempts being considered SPAM as was my prior post. I am not the most articulate so you may see my need to solicit help thus my intention in joining this community.

Ultimately I wish to develop partnerships with those who can mutually benefit. If there is another LJ community which my project is better suited, please advise. Your constructive input will be most appreciated.

Thank you.

Facebook introduced SMS updates via your mobile phone some time back. And after some time I enabled it to send updates via my mobile. All registrations etc. worked beautifully. Except that I am unable to send a single update via Facebook mobile number 32665. BUT every other evening I get an SMS from Facebook saying I can send updates via SMS.

Nov. 11th, 2009 @ 04:13 pm Heavy rains before and after
Since I last made an update on Facebook [on Monday] saying it was raining and very dark at just 5:30pm it has not stopped raining for more than a few minutes. We have been getting continous rain so far, so much so that a person called Noah has started building an arc over here.

Anyway today afternoon while leaving home for lunch on my usual route there was a torrent of water gushing out of a lane, yeah lane, not drain. I took a photo. I took one more while coming back.

When people move out of livejournal/ blogging, I have always thought they found something better to do which kept them busy.  I always believe there would be no such day, where I would dis-associate myself from the LJ world. LJ is a sort of relationship I build with myself, relationship I create and build with people I meet here, and a kind of virtual diary where I pour out myself here which is neither strictly private nor something  where I want everything I say to be heard. Though there is no classification on what I ramble here, I can share thoughts about some things here, which I might either want to just share here or know your opinion about. I really dont know how to define this relationship with myself and my blog-world.

Every time I login to the internet, the first thing I access is my Gmail followed by livejournal on an adjacent tab. I do not know how life would be without logging into LJ. I have been quite passive in my posting and commenting for some days now, not bcos I have nothing to share, just that life got clogged with too many things together, new activities, which I couldnt handle well myself. I was too stressed to handle things myself, and though I knew solutions myself, I was really experimenting with them.

At work, I was nominated to be one of the 6 people put together to organize a Day-Out event for 200 people. We had 2 months to begin with the plan. What followed was nothing but pure chaos as some people were intelligent enough to step back and some people found this as an opportunity to step in and dominate others while doing minimum work.  There were still some people, who were successful enough to maintain a High-Z state, not bothered about whats going around. Well, I did nothing but slog and run around stitching together broken links. Work suffered a lot during this time period, but since one is part of the core team working towards the event, nobody really complains.

At the end I have my own pending work piled up, innovations yet to be put into existing work, new work sitting on my desk, bills waiting to be cleared up, and the worst of it, my personal satisfaction of the event execution being a poor 5.5 on 10. Every thing has a good lesson learned in the end, so I wouldnt complain about the whole thing, as my awareness on Transport, DJ/MC, Gifts, Prizes, Audio/Video, Snacks, Resorts/beverages etc have improved quite a lot since then. Next time, I deal with similar people, I would learn to be more assertive rather than wait and watch the fun / hope for things to improve on its own.

Now back to work, Excel Sheets and Bills replaced with Grey linux terminals !

Nov. 11th, 2009 @ 02:06 pm good and the bad
ayttm project is humming along - reached 95%, thanks to a lot of support from Chennai LUG. Should be done by tomorrow. Then review and submission. With this under my belt, I plan to tackle Sachmo next. Should get progressively easier as good translations replace the bad. With Ayttm, I got 20% automatically done and about 20% fuzzy - the fuzzy was 90% crap. And the bad news, I have always wanted to contribute to Sahana and when I heard there was a python port, was thrilled. Unfortunately they have decided on web2py - a sucky looking framework 'written by college professors' and full of buzzwords. Maybe I could write a django port?

L: "Are some people scared of monsters?"
J: "They shouldn't be. Monsters aren't real."
L (in deep thought): "...If everyone in the world was real, would the pretend people in the pretend world be scared of monsters?"

Today Kavya had a part in a school skit. Titled 'Liar' where a school girl doesn't show her marks card to her father and lies saying she hasn't got it yet and lies with her teacher saying her father was out of town. Father and teacher meet and girl is caught, and later when she lose the card in the bus is accused of lying again.

Our Kavya is the father in the skit. A father with two missing upper teeth;-)

This video was shot in September when were in Cochin.

Nov. 11th, 2009 @ 08:33 am Morning Walk...and mental images...
Current Mood: happy
Current Music: starting arangisa now
The weather finally let up a bit today, and I went for an hour's walk; went down to Luz, down Katcheri Road (or Cutchery Road), down Santhome High Road to the Marina, along it and back through Sir Radhakrishnan (earlier Edward Elliotts) Road.

Didn't take a camera, but the images are vivid....

Newspaper vendors, with piles of the day's papers, busy putting in the advertising leaflets, and sorting them out for quick delivery.

Large piles of milk sachets...also being taken for delivery, or being sold as they are, on the pavement.

Several people who are still fast asleep in shop doorways or on the footpath. Some are just waking up, and retying their lungies.

Tea-shops along the way, already bustling with activity; knots of people standing around, eating small biscuits and sipping tea.

Stray dogs everywhere, approaching hopefully, but yet too scared of having a stone chucked at them.

Walkers and joggers in their "uniforms" (branded tees, branded running slacks, branded shoes, and sometimes caps....also branded...) walking or trotting along, also with umbrellas.

Beggars who share the road and footpath with these walkers, yet occupy a different planet.

A tourist taxi that has "Do Before Die" painted on its side. (I wish I had brought my camera after all.)

Women making kOlams along the pavements in front of their homes.

The cars of the rich, parked along the Marina (to have a healthy walk, it's necessary to pollute the atmosphere in your car.)

The autos, getting down to the first demand and bargain for fare, of the day.

Push-carts and "fish carts" (they are "mini carts", which got abbreviated to "min carts"...and "meen" is Tamizh for "fish", so then they became "fish carts"!) and pedal carts with vegetables on them...beginning the day's sales.

Dirty roads and footpaths, with LOTS of plastic and trash.

Puddles that I step over, skirt, or step gingerly through.

The realization that pedestrians have NO rights here. Footpaths are often just that...a FOOT in height from the road level, and difficult to get on, or off.....on the Santhome High Road stretch, often so narrow as to be unusable....

A lone raptor (NOT a Black or a Brahminy Kite, but too far away for id) flapping its wings slowly, fading into the sky.

The glass architecture on Radhakrishnan Road. Some old, gracious buildings, in bad shape.

Grey, leaden sky, not warm at all...but still, humid and sticky.

Traffic increasing as I walk towards home.

Pot-bellied police constables, who, to their credit, are alertly on duty on the roads.

Flower-sellers already displaying their wares...garlands and lengths of jasmine carefully preserved from yesterday.

The realization, once again, of how much I like walking....I am happy, content....and I head for home, coffee, and the day's newspapers.
