Totally confused on what to use!
First points first:

As I mentioned that my Zire 72 is in the ICU, I figured that since I am addicted to it I desperately needed a replacement. Zire 72 was the best mix one could (read:can, coz there is not replacement model, even now!) get at its time. I meant a decent camera for photo-blogging + PDA. Photo bloggin (a.k.a [info]clixonerdy) never took off big time. :-( It has bluetooth but I have started to miss WiFi on account that I am a poweruser of Avantgo (and alike)!

(00:48:21) aivalli: hi folks

(00:48:38) aivalli: I am buying a Lifedrive

(00:48:54) aivalli: anyone else has any suggestions ?

(00:49:03) aivalli: if its a good solution

(00:49:21) aivalli: I want a Palm with large storage

(00:50:24) aivalli: is there something better lurking around - if I wait for a while ?

(00:53:39) aivalli: helooooo anyone ? :)

(00:54:40) balrog-kun: LD should be fine

(00:55:36) balrog-kun: there are other modern pdas but probably nothing a whiole lot better than LD

(00:56:03) balrog-kun: unless we count the new linux phones

(00:56:30) Dekaritae: Khaytsus: Work on LJP ceased at RC3, but LJR is still going

(00:56:56) Dekaritae: aivalli: A LD or Zodiac are good options

(00:57:10) Dekaritae: The LD takes a Microdrive or CF card and one SD card

(00:57:16) Dekaritae: The Zodiac takes two SD cards

(00:57:20) Dekaritae: I have 8GB in mine

(00:58:42) Dekaritae: And Dmitry from 1src.com is working on an SDHC driver for PalmOS, which will allow some devices to work with 8GB+ SDHC cards

(00:58:46) balrog-kun: there are 8GB SD cards?

(00:58:50) Dekaritae: SDHC

(00:59:04) balrog-kun: i need to read up on this then

(00:59:09) Dekaritae: http://froogle.google.com/froogle_url?q=http://www.shop.com/op/~8GB_Super_SDHC_2_0_SecureDigital_Card-prod-39077315-51802650%3Fsourceid%3D298&fr=AGAsQHTTs24qtg2svCGw-5oSvk8iWaVJ7QAAAAAAAAAA&ei=dvm8RerELbiwkwHBmsSRCw&sig2=HYXlvLUmkOeDB63nPAwh-Q&gl=us&hl=en

(00:59:29) Dekaritae: No.

(01:00:09) balrog-kun: ah ok, wikipedia comes with some explanation

(01:00:18) Dekaritae: This one: http://ca.shop.com/amos/cc/main/prod/act/39077315%2C51802650/ccsyn/261

(01:00:21) tombs left the room ("N.Y.H.C.").

(01:00:27) Dekaritae: Right now only the Treo 680 and 700p support them

(01:00:51) balrog-kun: so they don't work with a standard MMC/SD host right?

(01:01:09) Dekaritae: No, but Dmitry believes that the IO driver from the 680 will work with any SDIO slot

(01:01:29) balrog-kun: i see

(01:01:36) balrog-kun: yeah it could be possible

(01:03:57) Dekaritae: http://www.1src.com/forums/showthread.php?t=121191&highlight=sdhc

(01:04:51) Dekaritae: http://www.1src.com/forums/showthread.php?t=120860&highlight=sdhc

(01:04:53) aivalli: whoa sorry had gone away

(01:05:43) ***balrog-kun tends to avoid .com pages when looking for technical info

(01:06:09) aivalli: LOL @ balrog-kun

(01:09:25) aivalli: Dekaritae: what is the highest onboard storage on a zod ?

(01:11:33) Dekaritae: What I have right now, two 4GB SD cards

(01:11:51) Dekaritae: But the case I use lets me carry around two extra cards

(01:12:19) Dekaritae: So I could theoretically have 16GB of storage with me at any time

(01:12:56) Dekaritae: Though all I have is a spare 2GB and 1GB cards in it

(01:16:13) Khaytsus: Dekaritae: I didn't mean LJP, I meant Crazy Frog crap

(01:16:26) Khaytsus: But I just started using LJP today, had been using Phoinix.

(01:16:38) Khaytsus: My Treo 650 didn't have enough dynamic ram for it before, but the 680 is fine

(01:16:46) Dekaritae: No

(01:16:48) Dekaritae: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0077831/

(01:17:22) Dekaritae: LJP is awesome, yes. It even takes ZSBNES save games, IIRC

(01:17:27) Dekaritae: ZSNES, durr

(01:17:34) Khaytsus: What's znes?

(01:17:37) Khaytsus: zsnes

(01:17:39) Khaytsus: Zipped?

(01:17:46) Dekaritae: Windows/DOS Emulator

(01:17:56) Dekaritae: I'm using LJP RC2 to play through a "Link to the Past" rom hack called "Parallel Worlds"

(01:18:05) aivalli: another question folks

(01:18:10) Dekaritae: http://www.zsnes.com/

(01:18:12) Dekaritae: Sure

(01:18:37) Khaytsus: I played Zelda 3 a little

(01:18:40) aivalli: will SDHC card readers will read SD cards ?

(01:18:54) Khaytsus: I played Links Awakening on Phoinix but could NOT control it well enough to beat the first boss :(

(01:19:01) Khaytsus: aivalli: yes

(01:19:07) Khaytsus: but not the other way around

(01:19:07) balrog-kun: yes, according to wikipedia

(01:19:10) aivalli: Khaytsus: kewl !

(01:19:32) Khaytsus: Dekaritae: Aha yes, I've played Links Awakening on the workstation using that, come to think of it.

(01:19:43) Khaytsus: aivalli: I don't know any Palm's that will do SDHC however

(01:20:04) Dekaritae: The Treo 680 and 700 will work with SDHC cards

(01:20:06) aivalli: does anyone have a decent guess on how long my Zire 72 will live ? :)

(01:20:15) Dekaritae: http://www.palminfocenter.com/news/9158/treo-680-compatible-with-8gb-sdhc-cards/

(01:20:24) Khaytsus: Dekaritae: I've heard *some* work.. but not supported

(01:20:30) Khaytsus: So perhaps

(01:20:33) aivalli: I wanna gift it to my mom I have had it for about 3 years I think

(01:20:33) Dekaritae: aivalli: It can live a long time, if you are good to it

(01:20:57) aivalli: Dekaritae: thanks

(01:21:01) Khaytsus: If you don't damage the screen, digitizer, etc, it'll last a long time, especially if you treat the battery well.

(01:21:16) Dekaritae: You might have to replace the battery now and then, as the cells tend to drop mean usable voltage over time

(01:21:20) Khaytsus: However, LiIon's will start deteriorating after 2-3 years, so the battery life might start decreasing

(01:21:27) aivalli: Khaytsus: I 90% charge it with the USB method

(01:21:31) Khaytsus: Although that probably means she'll need to charge it once a week with light usage

(01:21:58) Khaytsus: aivalli: Treating LiIon well means not totally discharging it a lot.. they prefer to be cahrged early and often verses ran all the way down all the time

(01:21:59) aivalli: and its generally on USB allteh time

(01:22:01) Dekaritae: I recently upgraded my Zodiac from a 1500 mAh battery that was a few years old, to a brand new 2000 mAh battery

(01:22:12) Dekaritae: I've gone from 3.5 hours of regular use to around 5.5

(01:22:16) Khaytsus: Then it's likely in pretty good shape

(01:22:41) aivalli: yeah save for the rubber paint goof up of palm folks

(01:22:57) aivalli: I call it skin disease ! ;)

(01:23:02) Khaytsus: The type of paint that starts flaking off where touched?

(01:23:05) Dekaritae: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lithium_ion_battery#Guidelines_for_prolonging_Li-ion_battery_life

(01:23:18) Dekaritae: Hurr

(01:23:20) aivalli: Khaytsus: yeah ! :(

(01:23:24) Khaytsus: My Thinkpad 600E was like that... where my palms touched it the paint bubbled

(01:23:31) ***Dekaritae will never buy a PDA that doesn't have a metal case

(01:23:39) aivalli: Dekaritae: even me !

(01:23:44) Khaytsus: What's funny is that the metal under it corroded to a black color, so it doesn't look all that different now ;-)

(01:23:50) Dekaritae: Zodiac is awesome in this respect. It's the most solid feeling PDA I've ever used

(01:23:51) aivalli: I wanna buy lifedrive wih the metal case

(01:24:01) aivalli: the one for palm just rawks ! :)

(01:24:02) Dekaritae: I mean metal casing

(01:24:45) Dekaritae: The Zodiac's front and back casing panels are made of metal, and not painted

(01:25:07) aivalli: I liked this conversation a lot - is it ok if I post this to my blog ?

(01:25:23) Dekaritae: You may

(01:25:27) aivalli: :)

(01:26:24) Dekaritae: One option I've seen is to mod your Palm so that the battery can be removed easily

(01:27:01) Dekaritae: So that, if you are going to leave it sitting in the charger for an extended period, you can remove the battery and save drain on it

(01:27:07) Dekaritae: This only works for NVRAM devices, though

(01:29:40) aivalli: balrog-kun: you mentioned the linux devices - how are they better ?

(01:31:21) balrog-kun: aivalli: they run a full blown OS, but also the ones i know have cutting-edge hardware in them (openmoko, greenphone)

(01:31:50) balrog-kun: openmoko has no wifi but has more ram than all other devices and other good stuff

(01:32:04) aivalli: any evices alrady on sale ?

(01:32:31) balrog-kun: i think greenphone is on sale

(01:32:32) aivalli: and what is the distinct advantage of buying that in place of lifedrive ?

(01:33:26) balrog-kun: well, i don't have a lifedrive, but...

(01:33:44) balrog-kun: if you want a plain PDA there's probably no real advantage

(01:34:43) aivalli: basically I want a new palm, I was thinking of clubbin the storage,

(01:34:59) balrog-kun: btw lifedrive can use a 6GB microdrive too, afaik

(01:35:00) aivalli: and then was looking at the 'new-age' devices

(01:35:26) aivalli: balrog-kun: which will give me ~10 GB on the moooooooooooove ! :)

(01:36:40) aivalli: balrog-kun: how do the hardware on linux based devices compare with lifedrive ?

(01:36:57) aivalli: does that make me spend extra on hte storage devices ?

(01:38:20) balrog-kun: all the linux devices are extremely expensive already

(01:38:41) aivalli: ok so I think I'll stick to my decision to get a lifedrive !

(01:40:57) johwil [n=orlando@unaffiliated/johwil] entered the room.

(01:41:06) aivalli: can lifedrive read SDHC ?

(01:41:32) balrog-kun: nope, at least not with the factory software

(01:42:38) aivalli: but you think that would be hackable ?

(01:43:48) balrog-kun: imho very difficult unless Dmitry comes up with something and makes it public as Dekaritae mentioned, but Dmitry tends to sell things

(01:44:02) aivalli: oh ok

(01:44:04) balrog-kun: if you're looking for storage there are PDAs with usb host function too, you can use usb sticks or databanks with them

(01:44:23) aivalli: they run palm OS ?

(01:44:28) aivalli: example ?

(01:44:41) aivalli: there is drivemode for lifedrive right ?

(01:44:55) balrog-kun: windows mobile, i don't know of any Palm with usb host

(01:45:04) balrog-kun: yes

(01:46:56) aivalli: ok (again) no more wavering from the decisoin on lifedrive ! :)

(01:51:01) aivalli: thanks guys its was fun and informative talking ! :)

(01:51:08) aivalli: now to hit the bed!

(01:53:28) Dekaritae: Dmitry would probably have a problem with selling a hacked version of a PalmSource driver

(01:56:27) ***Dekaritae fantasies about running the Cobalt Simulator full-screen on an OQO model 02

So despite arriving at a decision on chat to get a Lifedrive. I am still stopped cold by [info]atulchitnis and [info]ti22. [info]atulchitnis's arguement is Lifedrive has been stopped and is no longer available from Palm. [info]ti22's argument is Lifedrive is old.

I find that E50 is highly usable and a great business phone. So the big question is do I still need to get a Palm whatever! :-|

Answer will come along eventually in a short time.

More later!™
